PNU Summer School provides international students with an enriching cultural and educational experience through participation in a two-week program, four-week program, or both. Each program consists of academic courses covering diverse subjects and various cultural activities, including field trips. Summer School is divided into two non-overlapping sessions, Session A and Session B, which share common features. Students can choose one or both sessions according to their schedules, preferences and academic goals.
SESSION A
Tuesday, June 20 – Friday, July 21, 2017
Session A offers five-week intensive courses on academic subjects, Korean language and also includes fun cultural activities. Lectures are three hours daily from Monday through Thursday with a cultural activity on Friday. These courses are opened to PNU students as well, so students will take class along with Korean, and other foreign students at PNU. Courses each carry three credits, and participants can choose up to two of them. Official transcripts are issued to students who complete the courses. Courses are graded from A+ to F. Students wishing to transfer credits need to obtain pre-approval from their home universities. Courses may be added to the list below or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

Modern Korean Film and Cinematic Music

Using the techniques of cultural analysis, students will examine a variety of Modern Korean film and cinematic music to try to better understand contemporary Korean society and mind of Koreans. The course will address modern Korean history through deep discussions of Korea’s rapid economic development and political history, cultural ambience. Students will also learn how films are produced in Korea, and the use of music to convey the purpose of director’s intended message for the movie.

Overview of the Mythology and Traditional Arts of Korea

The goal of this lecture is to deepen both Korean and foreign students' understanding of the mental world of Korean people by helping them have chances to meet several Korean foundation and royal myths from Dangun to Seok Talhae and also traditional arts of Korea including Korean traditional architecture, classical literature, traditional clothing, traditional court and folk music and dance, and various traditional paintings.

The class will examine the recent history of K-pop and the 'Korean Wave' (Hallyu) to try to understand how it became so success, what messages are encrypted in the music and videos, what the culture business means to Korea's economic success, and what K-pop trends and fashions say about modern Korean society. Students will analyze songs, videos, entertainment companies, and all other aspects of the music business through group projects, short papers, class discussions, lectures, and tests.

Current Issues in International Relations

This course is designed, primarily, to introduce the students to several of the most important issues at the present time. However, in order to fully understand the importance of these issues the course will also offer a quick explanation of the most important theories in International Relations, as well as the importance of studying current issues and the implications for us as individuals. Following this introduction to International Relations the course will select three of the most pressing issues, focusing on different continents, for example Europe, Asia and North America. In doing so this course aims to teach the students about the varying political systems and values of states and regions, comparing the reasons why states act in certain ways and how opposing interests can be brought together.

The first part of the course will introduce the essential concepts and methodologies in better understanding security issues. Then in the second part, the course will look at the developments and nature of the security issues in East Asia, surveying the causes, circumstances, perspectives, and prospects for peaceful solutions.

After successfully completing this course students will be acquainted with the entrepreneurial process and the peculiar reasoning of entrepreneurs. The course covers entrepreneurship as a six-step process that includes: idea generation, feasibility analysis, competition analysis, business plan preparation, financing and marketing. In-class work will include group projects and case studies that illustrate the unique experiences of entrepreneurs in both Korea and abroad. This course will also include TED talk like seminars featuring local entrepreneurs who share their successes and failures with students in an effort to bring real life practical observations into our learning experience. After this introductory course student will be able to confidently take on future courses on entrepreneurial skills and insight.

This covers biomaterials, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, biosensors, biosignal/image processing, biotechnology, tissue engineering, genome engineering, metabolic engineering, etc. Moral and ethnical issues are also dealt with. During the course of class, in each relevant section, the basics of sciences and the cutting-edge technologies that are advancing and significantly contributing to our knowledge will be presented to help understand our topics.

Session B is a three-week program focused on understanding and experiencing various aspects of Korean culture--both traditional and modern. This course is called ‘Korean Studies’ and is composed of two classes; Understanding Contemporary Korean Culture and Korean language class. This session is not part of regular summer semester of Pusan National University, but is opened by PNU International just for this summer program. Therefore, students will be taking the same classes, participate in same cultural activities, and go on field trips to broaden perspective of Korean culture with other attendees and develop close relationship with them. This program carries three (3) credits and two classes are included in schedule. Official transcripts are issued to students who complete the course. Course is graded from A+ to F.
