South Korean students embark on travel writing and photography journey at Curtin Malaysia

Miri ? 25 January 2024 ? Eight students from Pusan National University in Busan, South Korea, recently wrapped up a transformative two-week Travel Writing and Photography short course at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) as part of the university’s overseas Summer/Winter Programme.

They were Kim Hyun Joon, Dayeon Kang, Chae-a Lee, Hong Yuna, Yuri Hong, See Hyun Jeon, Minji Kim, and Ji Yoo Lee. All of them are undergraduate students majoring in media and communications studies.

The short course from January 8 to 20 went beyond technical skills, offering the students a truly immersive experience. They honed their writing and photography techniques and delved into the rich cultural tapestry of Sarawak. The journey included a captivating city tour, a mesmerising visit to Niah National Park, and an authentic experience in a traditional longhouse at Sungai Asap, Belaga.

Run by Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), the Travel Writing and Photography short course is a practical course offered in customisable, intensive, and study-abroad formats and teaches students to source and craft publishable travel feature articles. They learn to research compelling stories, hone interviewing skills, master writing techniques, and pitch their ideas.

Apart from learning the skills and techniques of writing, students master the technicalities of compelling photography, composing and framing shots to enrich their articles.

The course introduces and examines the debates and discourses of travel writing as a genre. Awareness of these discussions helps students avoid pitfalls, navigate ethical practices, and handle contentious topics responsibly. This holistic approach prepares them to make informed decisions about their future as travel writers.

As the online world beckons, the course also guides students to leverage digital platforms for quality research and building their personal brands through digital publication.

The group’s leader, Kim Hyun Joon, said it was his first time coming to Malaysia. He mentioned that his professor informed him about an upcoming international winter programme offered by Curtin Malaysia, and eager to experience different cultures and countries, he immediately grasped the opportunity.

“I was nervous because it was my first time coming here. However, the people here are very warm and friendly, and the food is excellent,” said Kim.

He also expressed his liking for the longhouse stay, finding it a very unique experience. He said he was very impressed by the longhouse folks’ cultural performances, including the lilting sounds of the sap?, and took the opportunity to don the traditional attire.

Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to fostering global perspectives through experiential learning was evident throughout the course. The students not only gained practical skills but also broadened their cultural horizons.

Kim said learning about travel writing and photography in the exotic surroundings of Sarawak was an experience of a lifetime. He also expressed his intention to recommend Curtin Malaysia to his university mates and friends.

According to Kim, the group will be giving presentations on their experiences upon their return to Pusan National University, and he is certain students there will be suitably impressed by Sarawak’s natural beauty and rich cultural fabric.

Associate Professor Fidella Tiew, Director of SPACE, who accompanied the students on their visit to the longhouse along with lead instructor of the programme, Peter Jamba Anak Ental, expressed enthusiasm about the success of the Travel Writing and Photography course.

“It’s heartening to see students from Pusan National University embrace the opportunity to expand their horizons through travel, writing, and photography. This cross-cultural exchange enhances their academic journey and contributes to the global community,” said Associate Professor Tiew.

She said the short course continues to be a flagship programme at Curtin Malaysia, providing students an unparalleled blend of academic and cultural enrichment. The collaboration between Pusan National University and Curtin Malaysia exemplifies the commitment to global education and experiential learning.
