Lab assistant for stable isotope paleoclimate laboratory at the IBS Center for Climate Physics

Researchers of the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) paleoclimate laboratory use stalagmite

samples from caves to reconstruct past climates. The analysis is performed using various mass

spectrometry methods which can help identify past shifts in atmospheric circulation, rainfall and

temperature patterns. At present, the ICCP team is working on speleothems from South Korea,

Botswana, Morocco, China and Armenia. Our team collaborates internationally with archeologists

and anthropologists to determine the relation between past climate and human evolution

We are inviting applications for a full-time lab assistant position to support our paleoclimate

research team. The successful candidate will

- Prepare calcite powder samples from stalagmites and ?owstones for isotopic analysis;

- Conduct isotope measurements of water samples with a laser spectrometer;

- Measure ?uid inclusion isotopes;

- Maintain a clean and safe lab environment;

- Assist the research team on ?eld trips and provide logistic support;

- Participate in cave monitoring;

- Provide support with administration work and ordering lab materials when needed.

A bachelor degree in geology, physical geography, chemistry, physics, biology, or any relevant

?eld with scienti?c laboratory experience and good language skills in Korean and English are

required. Prior lab experience will be bene?cial.

Salary before taxes will be minimum 32M KRW but may be higher depending on the quali?cations

of the candidate. The appointment is for 1 year initially and can be extended by 2 year periods

depending on performance and available funding.
