Animals Are Dying Out! Save Them!
Many animals are dying out because of people, like the great auk. Others, such as orangutans and hedgehogs, are in danger.
The great auk was a bird. People hunted auks for food and feathers before it died out in 1844. This event showed that human actions can cause extinctions. Today, cutting down trees, dirty water and land, and climate change are hurting animals and plants. More than a million species are in danger. Hedgehogs are disappearing because cities are expanding, and people are using chemicals which kill hedgehogs.
In 2022, countries promised to protect 30% of nature by 2030. Some people, like Indonesian dentist Hotlin Ompusunggu, are also helping. Those who protect forests and save orangutans get cheaper care. To stop extinctions, we all need to do something now.
1. What do you think about animal extinctions? Do you believe they have/ will have an impact on humans, or not? Why?
2. What do you think about the idea of rewarding people who help protect nature, like in Indonesia? Could this work in other places? What about in Korea, is there such a system?
3. Why do you think some people still use harmful practices even when they know animals are in danger?
4. What's your favorite animal?
2nd session
1. If you had to describe yourself as a color, a season, and an animal, what would they be and why?
2. Do you have any plans for spring break? If so, what are they?
3. What’s a small thing that can instantly brighten your day?
4. If you could instantly master any skill, what would you choose and why?
Polar Bear World Dip Record
On March 1, 2025, 2,461 people in the Czech Republic broke the world record for the biggest polar bear dip. They jumped into the freezing water of Most Lake to beat the old record of 1,799 swimmers from Poland in 2015.
To set the record, people had to wear swimsuits, go into the water at least to their waists, and stay there for one minute. The water had to be colder than 10°C, and on this day, it was only 3.5°C. This event was very exciting, and many people around the world watched it. The swimmers were cold but happy.
People love testing themselves in difficult situations, and another country will likely try to break this record in the future.
1. Would you ever take on an extreme challenge yourself, or would you rather watch others do it? Why or why not?
2. Have you ever broken a record or wanted to? It can be something big, small, or even silly!
3. What kind of mindset do you think people have when they take on extreme challenges, like climbing high towers, swimming in freezing waters, or skydiving?
4. What sport do you consider extreme?
