[1.3.5.] Low or lower-middle income countries student support
Schemes to support poor students from low or lower-middle income countries (e.g. offering free education, grants)
1. Pusan National University(PNU) operates special admissions programs for students from low or lower-middle-income countries, including Myanmar and Ethiopia. Students admitted in 2024 via “Overseas Special Admissions” and the “Special Admissions for Students Recommended by Ethiopian Ministry of Education” received Entrance Scholarships, Academic Performance Scholarship, and PNU International Special Scholarship for Stipend. A free Korean-language improvement program was provided to reduce dropout risk from limited Korean proficiency.

2. PNU runs the International Student Bridge Alumni Association to help minority international students adapt through alumni and peer interaction. In 2024, participants from India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam received support for alumni-association activities and engaged in cultural experiences and academic exchanges.

3. “Strengthening Support for Socially Vulnerable Members” is a priority in the 22nd President’s Pledge. PNU reserved 10% of work-study scholarship slots specifically for minority students, including multicultural and North Korean defector students, to enhance support for those from low or lower-middle-income countries.

4. In 2024, PNU received an official commendation from the Ministry of Education of Myanmar’s National Unity Government for admitting Myanmar students on a full scholarship and facilitating enrollment for 15 self-funded Myanmar students.
