[2.5.1.] Access to food security knowledge

Provide access on food security and sustainable agriculture and aquaculture knowledge, skills or technology to local farmers and food producers

1. The Agricultural Science Education Center at Pusan National University(PNU) provides practical education for local farmers to “cultivate leaders with new knowledge and management skills for future agriculture.” In 2024, the center launched a smart farming major for successor managers, female farmers, and returning farmers, funded by Gyeongsangnam-do Province and Miryang City. The 26-week program included lectures by faculty from the Dept. of Horiculture and Biosciences and industry experts, covering hydroponic cultivation techniques and safe pesticide application.

2. The College of Natural Resources and Life Science, a leader in agricultural education and research, conducts regular training for local and prospective farmers to meet the social responsibilities of a national university and promote sustainable agriculture. In 2024, faculty from the Dept. of Horticulture and Biosciences delivered 16 agricultural technology lectures at the Gyeongnam Agricultural Meister College under the Korea Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' education program, focusing on eco-friendly farming and post-harvest management for prospective persimmon farmers. Professor Lee Yong-jae of the Dept. of Horiculture and Biosciences faculty also provided instruction on fruit tree fundamentals and basic cultivation for new and returning farmers in Gyeongsangnam-do.

3. PNU annually runs the international capstone project “Creativity Station,” which develops engineering solutions for farms and food producers in developing and disaster-affected regions. In 2024, in collaboration with University of Indonesia, the team assessed local farms and sugar producers in Indonesia and proposed fixes for livestock stress and chimney exhaust problems. The proposed solutions were published on Creativity Station's webpage named Windboy and YouTube for public access.
