[2.5.3.] University access to local farmers and food producers

Provide access to university facilities (e.g. labs, technology, plant stocks) to local farmers and food producers to improve sustainable farming practices

1. The affiliated farm of the College of Natural Resources and Life Science maintains diverse agricultural and livestock facilities, including animal breeding units, glass greenhouses, horticultural facilities, and a secondary farm. Its core operational goals are “creating collaborative spaces for local residents” and “developing tailored experimental and practical training programs.” The affiliated farm provides free access to facilities and agricultural machinery for prospective local agricultural students and local farmers.

2. In 2024, the College of Natural Resources and Life Science operated the Hyowon Green Farm Festival and a continuing-education program for recent high school graduates entering the workforce. It offered lab tours-including the Mosaic Core Lab and the Crop Physiology and Development Laboratory-for local citizens, agricultural workers, and prospective farmers. The Mosaic Core Lab, equipped for diverse life-resources research, conducts joint research and resource sharing with the local community. In 2024, Professor Kim Yu-jin used the Mosaic Core Lab for industry-collaborative research on gene transfer in cucumvers.

3. The PNU Experimental Forest, an affiliated forest of the College of Natural Resources and Life Science is open to local producers and residents, providing forest ecosystem monitoring, field learning, and education on sustainable forest resource use. In 2024, the affiliated forest offered the first PNU Experimental Forest Guided Class and launched a “Small Forest Creation Project” with local governments to establish planting beds.

4. The PNU Medicinal Plant Garden, an affiliated herb garden of the College of Pharmacy partnered with its municipal government to host a free 2024 Medicinal Herb Specimen Exhibition, sharing a variety of cultivated medicinal plant resources with local farmers and the civic community.
