[11.4.9.] Building on brownfield sites
Build on brownfield sites, where possible
PNU has prioritized “opening campus spaces and maximizing efficiency” in its mid-to-long-term development plan, implementing brownfield development principles to repurpose aging buildings and unused land.
1. In 2024, PNU relocated the Admissions Division of the International Affairs Office from the first floor of the Main Administration Building to establish the PNU History Hall in that space. The hall features a permanent exhibition area and multipurpose space, offering campus members and visitors opportunities for historical engagement and relaxation.

2. The site of the former 1st Affiliated Factory was redeveloped into the IT Building in 2024, avoiding unnecessary land development. The building integrates high-efficiency lighting and a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to reduce environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, from site selection and design to construction and management.

3. Additionally, PNU creates cultural, learning, and leisure spaces by utilizing underused land and building sites. In 2024, it transformed the Natural Sciences Building site into the multipurpose cultural space and the large grassy square called respectively “Gaon Narae” and “Saebyeok Courtyard,” and remodeled spaces within the Biomedical Science Library to establish the 24-hour reading room called “Haengnim Byeoldang.”
