- The objective of this paper is to give a preliminary assessment of three existing numerical approaches for simulation of free surface flows including (i) the Volume of fluid (VOF) interface tracking model which uses a geometrical tool for the treatment of interface between phases; (ii) the VOF interface sharpening model which reduces diffusion errors by solving an interface sharpening equation; and (iii) the simple three-equation two-phase model which is simplified from the Baer-Nunziato model for free surface flows. The governing equations in these three models are solved by a finite-volume Riemann solver method and the MUSCL procedure with a third-order accuracy for the extrapolated Riemann variables. We use a dam-break problem as benchmark tests for the basic solution validations and assessment of these models by comparisons of the computed results obtained by the numerical methods and the laboratory experimental data.
