- This study examined how major Korean daily newspapers organized and recorded the personal lives and deaths of Japanese military ‘comfort women’ through obituaries analysis. The subject of analysis are an obituaries about the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ reported by conservative newspapers Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo and progressive newspapers Kyunghyang Shinmun, Hankyoreh from October 1996 to October 2021. Findings shows many of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ socially reproduced by the newspaper were born in South and North Gyeongsang Province, under the age of 20, between 1941-1945, forcibly taken without knowing why, or were subjected to employment fraud or kidnapping. were taken as ‘comfort women’ by Japanese police officers and military police, and some Koreans also intervened in this process. The life of ‘comfort women’ took place mainly in China and Japan, where wars were fierce, and most of them returned to their homeland only after liberation in 1945. After returning home, they were most exposed to difficulties in their livelihood, and they lived a difficult life due to the physical and psychological aftereffects of living as ‘comfort women’ for a long time. Some of the dead took part in social activities such as witnessing ‘comfort women’ and taking part in court battles, but only a few. Most of the dead were recorded as living longer than 86 years, and the causes of death were old age, cancer, and long-standing diseases in that order. Contrary to this collective information of “comfort women” grandmothers, their personal names were often reported anonymously. In addition, most of the places of death and burial were in hospitals, but there were many secrets, and there were few articles announcing the existence of the bereaved family. This study emphasized that ‘comfort women’ grandmothers were subsumed into oblivion without the reader having an opportunity to mourn their deaths due to their outstanding anonymity and confidentiality, unlike the general obituaries.
