The major emphasis is on the acquisition of a broad scientific understanding of earth sciences, including astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, geology, geophysics, and teaching methods for earth science education.
The department opened in 1982 to provide opportunities for research in astronomy and meteorology, and extended the research fields to include geology, geophysics and earth science education in 1993. Now, the department provides instructions and opportunities for research in a wide variety of fields within the broad scope of earth sciences: astronomy, solid earth science, fluid earth science, and earth science education.

In astronomy, research topics are both in theoretical astrophysics (hydrodynamics, cosmic-ray physics and cosmology) and in observational astronomy (galaxies and stellar clusters), focused on the evolution of galaxies and large scale structures. In solid earth sciences, research topics are in the areas of geology, geochemistry, and geophysics, focused on igneous and metamorphic petrology and gravity.
In fluid earth sciences, research topics exists in modelling and parameterizing the atmospheric chemistry, relevant to the environmental sciences, and in climate dynamics on mesoscale. Research in earth science education is focused on the instruction method both on theoretical and experimental background.
