Introduction
The Department of Microbiology was established in 1979, and consists of 8 faculty members. The undergraduates are supported through various scholarship programs from the university and foundations, and the graduate students are fully funded by Brain Korea 21 plus (BK21+) program.
Department Of Microbiology
Microbiology is a basic study that provides a means to explore and understand the nature of life phenomena in higher organisms such as humans through the study of the structure and function of microorganisms that exist in all environments on Earth and are essential to human life.
Research Activity
Microbiology is getting the spotlight in biology, since new infectious diseases to threaten human lives emerge and importance of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa in food, pharmaceutic, and energy industries is apparent. The department of microbiology has 8 faculty members who are expertized in bacteriology, virology, biotechnology, and system biology, etc. The department is equipped with facilities needed to perform cutting-edge research. Furthermore, the department carries out many research projects that are supported by Korean and foreign governments as well as by industries. Currently, Brain Korea 21 plus project has been supporting the graduate students since 2013. This project focuses on marine and silver bio research and with the support of this project we are making every effort to foster students to experts in the field of microbiology.
Educational Goal
The educational goal of our department is to make efforts to foster talented graduates with strong capabilities and knowledge of microbiology who contribute to the development of country and human beings. Microbiology explores the structure and physiology of microorganisms, with the aim to understand the phenomenon of life, not only in microorganisms, but also in higher forms of life, including human beings. Microbiology also deals with the mechanisms by which pathogenic bacteria and virus cause diseases and applied areas such as production of useful materials and bioremediation by means of microorganisms.
