Department of Education

The Department of Education was established in the College of Arts in 1953 and then was joined to the College of Education in 1974. The Undergraduate Programs of the Department of Education have approximately 60 students - respectively 15 members in each level. The Undergraduate Programs have been carrying out the following main two functions.

Improving educational opportunities for K-12 children and youth has been a long-standing priority of the Department of Education. Over the years, the College of Education has developed innovative programs of professional study that are based on research and experience in schools. Together with other departments of the College of Education and local school districts, our Department of Education has developed professional development schools, where university faculty and students work with teachers and parents to develop, test, and demonstrate teaching and learning.

These programs help undergraduate students prepare for careers as secondary teachers and master's and doctoral programs leading to positions in school leadership. Research and development and teacher education are also offered. Graduate students are eligible for assistantship and fellowship that provides financial aid and opportunities to work with faculty members in research and to participate in the pre-service preparation of teachers.

Major theories of personality development are analyzed together with their implications for educational practice. Maladjustments and emotional problems in childhood and youth are systematically studied in terms of personality theories: psychodynamic theories. The course traits theories, behavioral theories, and phenomenological theories.

ED15029 Introduction to the Life-Long Education (3)

An introduction to the basic principles of life-long education. An intensive investigation into the process of social education and its programming.

ED15427 Knowledge based Society and Education (3)

This class puts an emphasis on the importance of the dynamic relationship between social paradigm change and education. Many futurists have identified several massive changes that societies have undergone from the agrarian to the industrial age, and now the knowledgeage. In terms of societal paradigm changes, what important aspects of education are needed for the corresponding societal paradigm What the educational paradigm should be changed for the current Knowledge-based Age This course first presents the major features of the societal changein relation to education. And then, it allows student to think thoroughly about new concept of education and its new role In particular, it instigates students to ponder upon why the concept of "education and learning" is so crucial in the knowledge-based society. Overall, this class provides students with fundamental rethinking about education in the relation to the mega societal paradigm change.

This class stresses the basic concept of distance education and e-learning which is a brand new name of the distance education. It also provides opportunity students with a macro understanding on the evolutionary changes from corresponding education, mass media based education, and current Web-based education. In the class activities, students take an active role of e-learning evaluators, e-learning designers and developers. In addition, it encourages students to have a potential to be blended learning strategic planners, designing better learning strategy under given conditions (physical environment, instructional methods, available communication devices, etc.).

This class underscores the basic concept of corporate education, related theories and strategies, and tactics. It contrast corporate education with many similar concepts like human resource development(HRD), human resource management(HRM), performance technology(PT), and Instructional systems design(ISD), organizational development(OD) and organizational behavior(OB). In particular, this course provide student with the basic concept of performance technology as a practical tool for solving real complex problems. In addition, the course allowed student to have a different perspective on educational institutes including primary, middle, and high schools in relation to other organization like corporations.
