The department of biological sciences was established in 1948 as a founding member of Pusan National University. The department is one of the oldest biology departments in Korea, has excellent alumni, and has met the national and local needs.
More recently, the department was given a rate of Excellent Biological Department in an evaluation by the Ministry of Education in 1994, and also Excellent Biological and Biotechnological Department (undergraduate and graduate programs) by Korean Council for University Education in 2004. The department also awarded several governmental funds for education and research, including New University for Regional Innovation (NURI) project in 2004 and Brain Korea 21 in 2005, “Research Group for Marine and Silver Biotechnology". Thanks to these funds, undergraduate and graduate students in the department have been offered opportunities of financial and academic support in various ways.
Based on the accomplishment, the department is seeking to stimulate research and education for excellent young biologists who can be leaders in science and technology. Especially the department is focusing on our specialization in the field of Marine and Silver Biotechnology, enhancing collaboration between academic and industrial research.
